Description
27-28 Pemberton Street is a late 19th-century manufactory, originally consisting of two separate buildings that have since been combined. It features red brick construction with painted dressings and blue brick detailing, topped by a stepped roof covered with composition slate.
The building has a U-shaped plan, with the main frontage stepping down from left to right. The front has eight window bays arranged in two sections of four, each with a doorway in the outer bay and paired windows on the inner side. There is a 20th-century vehicle entrance in the center, likely replacing a former shared passage to the rear yard. The door and window openings have pointed arch heads, with doorways beneath painted hood moulds, and feature panelled doors with barred overlights. The windows have blue brick bands at the arch heads and are framed as three-over-three pane sash windows. Each pair of windows has a painted common sill, with blue brick banding extending on either side. The upper floor mirrors the lower, with two groups of four windows set on painted sill bands, and there is a linked painted hood mould beneath the dentilled brick eaves.
At the rear, there are lower workshop ranges surrounding a central courtyard, which has been partially overbuilt with late 20th-century additions. This building is part of a group with No. 156 Warstone Lane and represents distinctive architectural features typical of industrial buildings in Birmingham, a city recognized for its manufacturing history.
