Description

62 Tenby Street North is a late 19th-century manufactory that has undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with blue brick detailing, painted stone dressings, end brick stacks, and a composition slate roof.

The structure has an L-shaped plan, featuring a narrow street-facing range and a storeyed workshop range at the rear. The exterior is three storeys high with a three-bay front. The central doorway is topped by a steep pointed-arched head, which has a corresponding overlight above a four-panel door. The arch features painted springers and a keyblock, along with elaborate brick banding that includes cut brick and blue brick margins. There is a dog-tooth impost band within blue brick margins. To the right of the doorway, there is a sash window with a painted cill above a dog-tooth panel. To the left, a wide cambered arch leads to a vehicle entrance, which is fitted with late 20th-century railed double gates.

Above the ground floor, there is a cill band that runs above a dog-tooth string, featuring three arch-headed sash windows with linked hoodmoulds. The smaller upper floor sashes have plain curved dripmoulds and advanced keystones. The eaves are moulded and corbelled above a string course. Attached at an acute angle to the main frontage is a two-storeyed workshop range, which has arched heads, blue brick cills, and banding above the window heads. A side passage leads to a narrow courtyard with workshops located on its north side.

This building forms part of a group with Nos. 62-64 Warstone Lane and Nos. 60-61 Tenby Street North. It is a distinctively detailed small late 19th-century manufactory that contributes to the industrial character of the street, showcasing architectural and planning features typical of specialist building types in Birmingham's industrial quarter, which is now recognized for its international significance.
