Description
No 133 Handsworth Wood Road, which includes No 2 Somerset Road, is a building from 1905 designed by Joseph Crouch and Edmund Butler in an Arts and Crafts style. It is situated on the corner, featuring a polygonal turret that is flanked by single gabled bays. The building has a brick plinth and is pebbledashed with stone dressings, topped with a tiled roof that has bracketed eaves and brick chimney stacks. It stands two storeys plus an attic.
The ground floor features a five-light window beneath a tiled lean-to with a bracketed eaves cornice, and the door is accompanied by a three-light mullioned window to its left. On the first floor, there is a Venetian type window and a three-light window in the gable. All windows have leaded lights, with some containing stained glass. The turret is adorned with cross windows that have blank tympana and blocking stones. On the return side, the entrance to No 2 Somerset Road is framed by a stone surround that includes a window on either side of the door, a canted bay window, and one-, two-, and three-light windows.
