Description
Barker Bridge, built in 1842, is a cast iron road bridge over the Birmingham-Fazeley Canal, likely produced by Horseley Ironworks. It features a plated deck supported by nine depressed arch girders that curve sharply down into brick abutments. The bridge has a central cutwater made of stone, flanked by eight brick piers that are arcaded at both the top and bottom, rising to a crown. The spandrels of the facing arches are panelled, with the north-east face displaying blind quatrefoils inscribed in circles. A roll moulded iron string runs along the deck level and continues in stone over the abutments. The south-west face of the bridge retains its original cast iron parapet, which has a blind pointed oval grid of closely set vertical panels.
