Description
The central block of premises occupied by Newey Goodman Limited dates from around 1840 and is located on Brearley Street in Newtown. This three-storey building is constructed of buff red brick and features a symmetrical front with a broad single brick centre break flanked by three-bay wings. It has an engineering brick plinth and a painted stone plat band above the ground floor. The low slate roof has projecting moulded eaves cornice with a deep soffit.
Above the centre break, there is a stepped section of blocking course that is panelled and inscribed with "J C Newey. Patentee," topped by the Royal Arms made of polychromed stone. The ground floor has a broad works entrance framed by pilaster strips, featuring a deep frieze and projecting cornice. The windows throughout the building have small panes set in five iron frames, with stone sills and rubber brick gauged flat arches. The tripartite windows on the upper floors in the centre break are separated by plain brick dividers.
