Description
Thomas Rickman's tomb is located in St George's Gardens, Newtown, and is made of sandstone. It features a tabernacle "chancel" design with cusped panelling on the plinth. The tomb chest is enclosed by an arched gabled canopy, which has eroded late 14th century debased cusped arches, ball flowers, and drips on carved stops, along with crockets on the gable. The largely defaced inscription commemorates Thomas Rickman, an architect and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, who was known for correctly naming various architectural styles and explaining the principles of ecclesiastical architecture. The monument was dedicated by a few of his friends in the cemetery of one of the many churches he designed. He died in January 1841 at the age of 64.
