Description
South Lodge at Oscott College was built between 1840 and 1841 by AWN Pugin. The lodge is constructed of brick with a tile roof and features stone dressings around the window and door openings.
The lodge faces east onto Court Lane and has a rectangular plan, with a carriage arch located at its northern end. The carriage arch is set within a wide, pointed-arch opening that has a moulded surround and a hoodmould with labelstops, which include the carved letters T and W. Stepped buttresses flank the arch, and the gates are made of timber with ironwork. Above the arch, there are two flat-headed windows, each containing a single light with cusped tracery and mouchettes. Between these windows is a panel displaying the coat of arms of Thomas Walsh and the date 1838, all topped with a continuous hoodmould. The gable above features a cross outlined in brick and is finished with moulded stone copings. To the south, there is a projecting wing with simpler windows that illuminate the stair inside, along with additional crosses in the brickwork.
On the rear elevation, which faces the estate, there is a matching arch with a four-light traceried window above, flanked by the initials 'TW' outlined in brick. The southern wing contains two paired windows, and there is a single-storey brick extension beyond this.
Inside, access to the lodge is gained through the arch. The interior mainly consists of modern features but retains some original doors and a simple timber handrail for the stair, supported by chamfered posts.
