Description
The Church of St Mary is a church dating back to the 15th century. Originally built as a chapel within the parish of Kings Norton, it has undergone several rebuilds and enlargements throughout its history. The plain stone west tower, added in the early 16th century, features brick refacing. The main body of the church was rebuilt in 1780 and altered by Thomas Rickman between 1823 and 1824. A complete reconstruction, excluding the tower, was then undertaken by the Chatwin family, father and son. J. A. Chatwin added a north aisle in 1886, expanding it to include a chancel and side chapel in 1897. The nave and south aisle were rebuilt in 1910 by P. B. Chatwin, who also supervised a reconstruction following war damage between 1952 and 1954. The church’s exterior is ashlar and displays a competent, simply modelled Decorated style characteristic of the Chatwin practice, with crenellation to the tower parapet.
