Description
Berrow Court Hotel is a Grade II* listed building located on Berrow Drive in Edgbaston. It was originally built as a substantial private house by architect J.H. Chamberlain around 1870-1875. The design reflects Chamberlain's mature red brick Gothic style, featuring intricate cut and moulded brickwork along with floral stone ornamentation and stone dressings. The building has two storeys and attics, arranged in a compact asymmetrical L shape. It showcases steep gable end tiled and crested roofs, along with tall moulded brick chimney stacks. The windows are a mix of coupled and single pointed arches, and the south garden front includes two-storey canted bays. Some sash lights still retain decorative leading.
While there have been alterations and modernisations to parts of the north front, the building retains its shafted porte cochere. The interior has undergone changes for hotel use, but much of the decorative joinery and door furniture remains intact. This includes typical features of Chamberlain's work, such as tongue and groove 'Gothic' panelling and brass furniture. The staircase is also characteristic of Chamberlain, being top-lit with slender turned bannisters and Gothic newel posts. The drawing room, which was formerly a library, still has a fitted bookcase with Gothic details and an ornate fireplace with tilework and a reredos-like overmantel mirror.
