Description
The War Memorial located to the south-east of the Church of St Mary commemorates those who died in the First World War and was erected in the 1920s. It is made of Portland stone and features rectangular slate tablets that display the names of the deceased. The memorial consists of a rectangular platform supporting a square plinth, which has canted steps leading to its lower body. Above the steps are four inset slate tablets. On the south-east side, there is an inscription that reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS DISTRICT / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 + 1919'. Other panels list the names of the fallen, organized by the year of their death.
The chamfered base of the memorial has panels of blind tracery, and on either side are moulded brackets that support carved figures of Mary, Mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene, positioned beside the cross. The cross itself depicts the slumped body of Christ wearing a crown of thorns and features a gablet at the top.
This memorial is noted for its unique design, strong architectural composition, and its well-preserved condition, serving as a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made during the First World War. It also holds group value with the Church of St Mary, which is also designated as Grade II.
