Description
The Hamstead War Memorial is a granite structure unveiled in 1920 to honor the men of the parish of Hamstead in Birmingham who lost their lives during the First World War.
The memorial features a Celtic style wheel cross with a plain shaft and a tapered plinth, which stands on a stepped base set upon a rectangular stone slab. The front face of the plinth has an inscription in leaded letters that reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ WHO GAVE US THE VICTORY/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE HAMSTEAD MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS/ FOR THEY SHALL BE CALLED THE/ CHILDREN OF GOD'. The sides of the plinth list the names of 22 men who died, along with the regiments or divisions in which they served. The rear face of the memorial includes the inscription 'ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ DECEMBER 1920'.
