Description
The Lad in the Lane Public House, formerly known as the Old Green Man Inn, is located on Bromford Lane in Erdington and was founded in 1306, making it one of the oldest inns in the country. The existing building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries but has been significantly altered and enlarged in the 1930s. It features a timber-framed structure with an open hall consisting of three bays divided by a cruck truss, which has been considerably modified and now includes modern rafters and studding. There are two additional pairs of crucks in the south wall. At the north end, there is a two-storey crosswing, likely built in the early 16th century, with close studding and jowled corner posts. The crosswing has a cambered tie beam and collar with raking struts to the central truss, and the storey posts are exposed. Externally, the west gable of the wing showcases close studding with curved braces, along with modern brick infill and fenestration.
