Description

A terrace of twelve houses, now offices, with attached railings, built between 1833 and 1834. Some portion was built by Mr Swain. The terrace is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, and has mainly Welsh slate roofs, with cement tiles to the left-hand section. Cast-iron railings and balconies are also present.

The houses are arranged over three storeys with 24 first-floor windows, with bays 3-6, 11-14, and 19-22 projecting. The terrace exhibits a symmetrical, Neo-classical design. The ground floor features horizontal rustication. The first floor has tall, unequally-hung 1/1 sash windows; except for those at number 28, which are 6/4 sashes, all set within tooled architraves with a frieze and cornice, with pediments over the centre four windows. The second floor also has 1/1 sashes, again with 6/6 sashes at number 28, all with tooled architraves and sills. A stepped cornice leads to a low parapet with balusters to the centre, surmounted by four anthemions and a pedimented centre to the two central bays. The ground floor has end entrances, with the two outer and central bays featuring Tuscan pilasters; the remaining entrances are set within porches (partly missing to number 32). Part-glazed doors are present, with those in the Tuscan porches having overlights with glazing bars, while others have fanlights with decorative glazing. The windows are tripartite 1/1 sashes, except at number 28 where a 6/6 sash is present between a 4/4 sash, and at number 10 where a single 1/1 sash is found. The basement has plank doors and mainly 6/6 sashes, with some 2/2 and 1/1 sashes and multi-pane casements. Ridge stacks are visible. A continuous balcony runs along the first floor, featuring a double-rod motif on ornamental brackets, with smaller balconettes to the left-hand dwelling. The interior was not inspected. The attached railings are of a lancet area design. Numbers 10-32 form a group with number 2 (Grove House) Newbold Street and number 40 Holly Walk.
