Description
3 High Street is an 18th-century building of seven bays, originally two storeys plus an attic. The front facade is of red brick with sash windows set within wide, moulded cased frames, featuring heavy glazing bars on the first floor. Gauged brick arches are above the windows, and painted stonework defines the sill lines, a string band at the first floor, a moulded cornice at the eaves, and the plinth. Four dormers, each with a steeply pitched pediment, project from the well-weathered tile roof. An off-centre carved wooden doorcase, notable for its unusual “Masonic” design and “Egyptian” columns, provides access to the building. Stained glass, formerly in the tympanum, was inscribed with the words "Shakespear Lodge ... founded 1791." Inside, there is a panelled room and an 18th-century staircase. A reeded inner doorcase dates from the early 19th century. The building contributes to a group of listed buildings along the South Side of High Street.
