Description
Nos 2 and 4 on High Street are a notable late 17th century building. It has three storeys with three-window facades facing both High Street and Church Street. The facades feature unobtrusive 19th century plate glass shopfronts, along with 18th century projecting balconies and ornamental wrought iron balustrades. The walls are currently covered in stucco. The windows are sash types set in narrow cased frames with moulded architraves. Ionic pilasters are present at the corners, and there is a short length of entablature with a pulvinated frieze above. Simple panelled pilasters flank the central bays. A heavy wooden cornice with egg-and-tongue detailing, carved modillions, and paterae adorns the soffit. The building has a hipped roof covered in well-weathered machine tiles. Inside, there is a good simple staircase that appears to have been added in the late 18th century. Nos 2 to 8 (even) are part of a group.
