Description
No 1 High Street, formerly known as The Aylesford Temperance Hotel, is a notable late 17th-century Baroque building located at the corner of High Street and Castle Street. The building features a rainwater head inscribed with "SWM 1696". It stands three stories tall and is constructed with painted brickwork and stone dressings. The design includes two-story Doric pilasters, an architrave, and a frieze at the quoins. A continuous moulded wood cornice at the eaves is decorated with egg-and-tongue enrichment and heavy carved modillions. The windows are sashes set in cased frames with keyblocks. The hipped roof is covered with old tiles.
The facade facing High Street has three windows, with the central window featuring an eaved surround, a moulded architrave, carved console brackets, and a broken segmental pediment. It also includes a Neo-Georgian shopfront with a cast iron balustrade above. The Castle Street facade has seven windows and is designed similarly, but the central feature is enhanced with laurel leaf decoration and topped with a triangular pediment. On the left side, there is an early 19th-century doorcase with an eight-fielded-panelled door and a fanlight, flanked by Doric pilasters. The ground floor of the Castle Street elevation is channelled, and there is a balcony on the High Street side that rests on consoles.
All the listed buildings on the south side of High Street form a cohesive group.
