Description
The Parish Church of Saint Nicholas is located on Southam Road in Radford Semele. It was originally built in the early 12th century and enlarged in the 14th century when the tower was added. However, the church was largely rebuilt in 1889, with the exception of the tower and the south wall of the nave. The rebuilding cost £2,200, funded by John Francis-Greswolde-Williams, the patron and lord of the manor. The design was created by the architectural firm R Rowe and Son from Worcester, and the work was carried out by Councillor Dawkes of Leamington.
The church features walls faced with ashlar stone, except for the south wall of the nave, which is made of random rubble. It has a steeply pitched plain tile roof. The east window of the chancel is a three-light window with Perpendicular tracery, while the other windows in the main body of the church primarily consist of two-trefoiled lights. Notably, there is a small 12th-century window in the south wall of the nave, which has a round head made from a single stone and a hood mould with square stops. Above the south doorway, which dates from the 14th century and has two moulded orders, is an 1889 rose window.
The Perpendicular west tower has two stages and features angle buttresses that end just below the embattled parapet. Its west face includes a window with three cinquefoiled lights. Inside, the chancel arch is pointed and consists of two chamfered orders supported by short shafts with foliated capitals on corbels. The nave connects to the north aisle through an arcade of three pointed arches with moulded piers. The nave also opens into the tower through a lofty two-centred arch of two chamfered orders, with the imposts cut back as square pilasters. The reredos is made of Caen stone and features four columns supporting three canopies with carved mouldings and finials, given by Dr Blunt in memory of his mother.
