Description

Radford Hall is a large red brick house dating from the early 17th century, located on Southam Road, Radford Semele. It has stone dressings and a steeply pitched plain tile roof hidden behind a brick parapet on the front elevation. The house stands on a stone plinth and is two storeys high, with five bays across a long, nearly symmetrical facade. It follows a half H-shape plan, with gabled wings to the rear.

The central projecting porch bay is faced with stone and features a four-centred arched doorway with a studded oak plank door. Above the doorway is an eight-light stone mullioned and transomed window, with leaded panes. A brick parapet tops the porch bay, decorated with four obelisks. The bays to the north and south of the porch are set back, with two- and six-light mullioned and transomed windows to the north, and two- and eight-light windows to the south, all fitted with leaded panes. The projecting end bays are gabled and have brick angle pilasters topped by obelisks, with four-light mullioned and transomed windows on both ground and first floors.

In 1836, architect William Thomas renovated the Hall for Henry Greswold Lewis, during which the original stonework was covered with brick, and the mullioned and transomed windows were restored. A large diagonal shafted brick chimney stack is a prominent feature.

The interior includes good early 17th-century panelling dated 1622 in the entrance hall, 17th-century panelling in a first-floor bedroom, an original stone fireplace, and later softwood square panelling in the lounge.
