Description
The Shrewley Tunnel south portal on the Grand Union Canal is a tunnel portal built in the late 18th century, with later alterations. It was likely designed by William Felkin and Philip Henry Witton for the Warwick and Birmingham Canal Company. The structure features a single semi-circular arch made of brick, with a brick band and an outer stone band that includes a keystone and stone imposts. Above the arch, there is a stone band followed by a parapet made of Staffordshire blue bricks, which is topped with a solid iron kerb. To the left of the portal, there is a wing wall with alternating bands of brick and stone, which supports the embankment leading the towpath upwards to form a horse-path that crosses fields to connect with the towpath tunnel at the Shrewley Tunnel north portal.
