Description
The Shrewley Tunnel north portal is a tunnel portal and high-level towpath tunnel for horses on the Grand Union Canal, dating from the late 18th century with later alterations. It was likely designed by William Felkin and Philip Henry Witton for the Warwick and Birmingham Canal Company. The structure is made of brick and stone, featuring semi-circular arches faced with blue-grey engineering bricks at both portals. The main portal includes a brick band, while the towpath tunnel is brick paved and vaulted, with coursed stone and brick walls. The southern entrance of the towpath tunnel has a red brick horseshoe-shaped arch with a dripmould keystone and squared stone coping. This site is a very rare example of a combined canal and towpath tunnel.
