Description

High House is a house located on Rowington Old Warwick Road, likely dating from the late 16th century, with an encasement added around 1700. The building features a stone ashlar plinth and red brick walls with flared headers arranged in Flemish bond. It has a plain-tile hipped roof, with 20th-century rebuilt brick stacks on either side of a flat platform at the top. The house has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high with an attic, presenting a three-window range.

The central entrance consists of a six-panel door framed by a plain stone surround, topped by an oval window. On either side of the entrance are 20th-century angled bay windows with hipped plain-tile roofs. The first floor has 20th-century wooden cross-windows, featuring segmental brick heads, and there is a dog-tooth brick course between the ground and first floors. The façade is enhanced by giant order Doric brick pilasters between the bays and at the ends, along with a cut brick cornice at the eaves.

The inner sides of the chimney stacks have doorways with plank doors that lead to the roof platform. The left and right returns mirror the front elevation, with similar features including the stone ashlar plinth, red brick with flared headers, and 20th-century windows.

Inside, there is a straight flight staircase leading from the ground to the first floor, featuring a pierced splat balustrade. There are also winder staircases connecting the first floor to the attic and from the attic to the roof platform. Most rooms have open fireplaces and chamfered spine beams with stepped stops.
