Description

This is a picturesque terrace of two-storey cottages, originally thought to be of 17th-century origin. However, numbers 18, 20, and 22 retain practically continuous square timber framing with colour-washed brick infilling. The greater part of number 16 has been rebuilt in 18th-century brickwork. The cottages feature simple 18th-century casement windows, some with leaded lights, and plain boarded doors. Number 16, at the right-hand end, is a two-storey cottage with an attic, built of probable 18th-century brickwork, with camber-headed casements on the lower storey, a partial stone plinth, a modern gabled porch, and a weathered machine tile roof. The remaining cottages have a continuous roof of old tiles. Numbers 26 and 28 are of 18th-century brickwork with camber-headed casements and gabled dormers; number 28 possesses a plinth, quoins, and a wall on the south end constructed of sandstone blocks with a timber-framed gable head. Modern porches are present at numbers 20 and 24, with a gabled porch at number 24 dating to the 19th century. Number 22 has three gabled half-dormers. Numbers 16 to 28 (even) form a group, contributing to the group value.
