Description

Florence House is a villa dating to circa 1838, with later alterations. It is constructed of brick with painted stucco facades and has a Welsh slate roof. The villa is three storeys high and has three windows to the main first floor. The first floor features 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals, with moulded surrounds and sills. A central ground-floor entrance is accessed via two roll-edged steps leading to part-glazed double doors, featuring etched glass and a fanlight with decorative glazing-bars within a moulded surround. A Corinthian porch with two fluted columns and similar engaged pilasters, a double frieze, and a modillion cornice enhances the entrance. The ground floor also incorporates 6/6 sash windows in moulded surrounds, a frieze, cornice, and a continuous sill band. The second floor presents three 3/6 sash windows within tooled surrounds, sills, and plain reveals. An eaves band, cornice, and hipped roof are complemented by two stacks with cornices on each side. A conservatory, likely contemporary with the house, is attached to the rear. The interior remains uninspected. Attached to the sides are rusticated walls with entrances to gardens, featuring four-panel doors with blind fanlights, cornices, and a low parapet. Leam Terrace was laid out circa 1828-1836, and development along Willes Road was largely complete by 1841.
