Description

Woodcote is a Grade II listed house located on Woodcote Lane in Leek Wootton. The main part of the building was constructed in 1861 and extended in 1869 by architect John Gibson in the Jacobean style for Henry Christopher Wise. This large sandstone ashlar house has a rectangular plan, measuring six bays long by four bays wide, and stands two storeys high with an attic. It features a tall moulded plinth and string bands with saw-tooth decoration, along with a moulded eaves cornice. The steeply pitched plain tile roof has gabled ends, each adorned with finials. The windows are stone mullion/transom types with four and six lights. The south elevation's end bays have two-storey splayed bay windows with carved balustrading made of pierced stonework. The main entrance is located on the left side of the east elevation, within a two-storey projecting bay that has a curvilinear gable. The entrance porch features a four-centred arch with stiff leaf carving in the spandrels, and above it is an oriel bay window with a carved stone armorial balustrade. All chimney stacks have been truncated. There is a later addition, also dated 1869, that projects from the northeast gable.

Inside, the house boasts several notable features, including chimney-pieces. The square inner hall is centrally located in the main building, with a stone staircase on the north side leading to an arcaded first floor. The arches of the first-floor arcade are supported by paired slender marble columns. The inner hall has a flat ribbed timber ceiling, and both the entrance porch and the passage connecting it to the inner hall are adorned with rib vaulting.
