Description
Three houses, now shops with showrooms and flats above, were built around 1822-1826, with later alterations including mid-20th century shop fronts on the ground floor. The houses are located on Chandos Street and Warwick Street in Royal Leamington Spa. The facades are of painted stucco, set against reddish-brown brick stacks, and the central section has Welsh slates, while the remainder of the roofs are cement tiles.
The properties are four storeys high, with eight first-floor openings. A single-window bay to the left and a three-window bay to the right project forward, with Tuscan pilasters rising through the first and second floors of the right-hand projection. The first floor features two tall 6/6 sash windows, a blind opening, two more 6/6 sashes, and three 20th-century windows, all within plain reveals. A second-floor band is followed by two 6/6 sashes, a blind opening, two more 6/6 sashes, and three 20th-century windows, again in plain reveals with sills. The building has a frieze, architrave, and dentil cornice, topped by a blocking course and copings. The second floor contains two 3/3 sashes, a blind opening, a 6-pane fixed-light window, a 3/3 sash, a casement window, and two blind openings, all in plain reveals. The ground floor features three roll-edged steps leading to a six-panel door with overlight, two shop fronts with glazed entrances, four steps to a four-panel door with fielded-panel reveals and a blocked overlight, and a further glazed shop front. Two ridge stacks are present, one to the left with a cornice, and a rear stack to the right. A band above the second floor to the left bears the inscription "CHANDOS HOUSE" in raised letters.
The left return side is four storeys high with a five-window range. Plain pilasters are present to the left and right, as well as flanking the central window, on the first and second floors. The windows are 20th-century replacements set within original openings; there are three on the first floor, and five elsewhere. Blind openings are visible on the third and fourth floors, all within plain reveals and with sills, except on the third floor. A frieze, architrave, and cornice define the second floor, surmounted by a blocking course and copings. A further range extends to the rear.
To the rear of numbers 81 and 83, the windows are a mix of 8/8, 6/6, and 4/4 sashes. The interiors of numbers 81 and 83 include dogleg staircases with stick balusters. Warwick Street was laid out around 1822-1826.
