Description

The former cottage and attached barn at Stapenhall Farm date from around 1782, with an early 19th-century addition to the left and subsequent alterations. The cottage is constructed of squared coursed limestone, while the addition is of Flemish bond red brick. The roof is tiled, with 20th-century brick ridge stacks. The cottage was originally a two-unit lobby entry plan, later altered and extended to a three-unit plan. It is two storeys and attic height, with a two-window front. The entrance to the addition has a plank door set within a segmental arch. The original 18th-century range has a blocked central doorway with a flat arch. Window openings have wooden lintels, with a fragment of a stone flat arch above the right-hand window; casements are missing. Leaded light casements remain on the left return side and rear. Inside the cottage, there is an open fireplace with a wooden surround and moulded shelf, alongside a winder staircase. A ceiling beam features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A 19th-century straight flight staircase is also present. Further interior details include plank doors with strap hinges, a stud partition on the first floor, and old wide floorboards. To the right of the cottage is a three-bay barn with central plank doors and vents, containing a queen strut roof with original timbers that has been slightly raised. The buildings were likely constructed shortly after the Enclosure Act of 1782.
