Description

Western House is a house said to date from 1688, with alterations made in the early to mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick, featuring limestone quoins and a cement rendered plinth, topped with a concrete tile roof and a largely rebuilt brick ridge stack. The house has a 3-unit lobby entry plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range. The 19th or 20th-century fielded six-panelled door has an overlight with glazing bars, framed by a plain rendered surround with a thin cornice. The ground floor features two-light casements with glazing bars, which are set beneath rusticated rendered flat arches with keyblocks, while the first floor has painted wood lintels. The left return side displays diaper brickwork, and the rear showcases chequered brickwork, along with a 20th-century half-glazed door to the right, a fire window, and additional two- and three-light casements.

Inside, the room to the left has a moulded ceiling beam, while the room beyond contains a stepped-stop broad-chamfered beam. The room to the right features an ogee-stop broad-chamfered ceiling beam, and there is an open fireplace with a bressumer, possibly from the 18th century and imported from elsewhere. A 20th-century staircase is present, and the first floor includes run-out and stepped-stop chamfered ceiling beams. This house is noted as one of the earliest uses of brick in Harbury.
