Description

Wissett Lodge is a house located on Harbury Church Street, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with earlier origins. It features a cross wing from the mid to late 18th century and some alterations from the 19th century. The building is constructed of regularly coursed limestone. The left return side has a timber-framed gable with rubble infill and 20th-century brick nogging. The roof is covered with 20th-century tiles, and there is a stone lateral stack on the left return side. The house is in an L-plan layout, with a cross wing to the right and a rear wing. It has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range. The 19th-century six-panelled door has narrow panelled reveals and a doorcase with a dentil cornice. To the right, there is a three-light leaded casement, while to the left and on the first floor are late 19th-century three-light casements with horizontal glazing bars. A small 20th-century window has been inserted in the angle. The cross wing features three-light wood mullioned and transomed windows, leaded on the first floor, with stone flat arches. There is also a leaded two-light attic casement and painted wood lintels. The rear has 20th-century casements.

Inside, the house has fielded four-panelled and two-panelled doors. The kitchen includes a stud partition, and the hall features 20th-century plasterwork and panelling in a mid-17th-century style. There is a quarter turn staircase from the 17th or 18th century with turned balusters. A room to the left has an ogee stop-chamfered beam, and there is a massive timber on the first floor, possibly part of a cruck. The first floor also showcases exposed timber framing and fielded two-panelled doors.
