Description
Wagstaffe School House is a former school, now a house, founded in 1611 by Thomas Wagstaffe. It was restored in 1866 and converted in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of regularly coursed limestone with a plinth and sandstone dressings. The old tile roof features coped gable parapets with weatherings and ball finials, along with a brick lateral stack on the left return side and an end stack at the rear.
The structure has a T-plan with a cross wing on the left and stands two storeys high, with the roof later converted to an attic. It has a three-window range. The entrance in the cross wing consists of 20th-century panelled double-leaf doors set in a moulded straight-headed four-centred doorway, which has moulded spandrels and a hood mould. The building features recessed chamfered stone mullioned windows throughout, most of which have hood moulds. The cross wing has a four-light window on the ground floor and two three-light windows on the first floor. Between the first-floor windows is a datestone with a long inscription in a moulded frame. The right return side has a small three-light window on the first floor, while the main range includes two five-light windows on the ground floor and one on the left side of the first floor. The left return side has a five-light window, along with three-light and one-light first-floor windows. The right return side features a large five-light window with a transom. The rear has three four-light ground floor windows, with the right window being considerably longer, and the first floor has three- and four-light windows.
Inside, there is a wide basket-arched doorway. The former schoolroom includes a chamfered stone Tudor-arched fireplace and a stepped-stop moulded ceiling beam. A heavy panelled wooden screen features a six-panel door, with another door inserted, and turned balusters. The first floor has plank doors with strap hinges, and one room on this floor has a smaller chamfered Tudor-arched fireplace. The inscription on the datestone reads: "Founded by Thos. Wagstaffe, Gent. 1611. Estab'd by Decree in Chauncery (Butler versus Wagstaffe) 1637. Confirmed by order of ye same Court (Attorney Gen. versus Barber) 1759."
