Description
The Church of St Peter is a church that dates from the 12th to the 14th century, with restorations carried out in 1820 and repairs around 1940. It is constructed of ashlar and coursed ironstone rubble, featuring ironstone banded with limestone at the east end, and has tile and slate roofs with stone coped gables topped with ball finials. The church comprises a chancel, nave, west tower, and south porch.
The chancel includes a three-light east window with intersecting tracery, a pointed arched doorway with a plank door on the south side, a square-headed Perpendicular window to the left, and a two-light Perpendicular window to the right, which has a hood mould and label stops. On the north side of the nave, there is a Romanesque north doorway with billet and cable mouldings, a blocked entrance, two tall round-headed Romanesque windows, and a square-headed window. The south side of the nave features two lancets and a two-light window with Y tracery, which has a cusped head and hood mould. There is also a renewed Y traceried window to the left of the gabled porch, and a pointed arched south doorway with chamfered jambs and a plank door.
The west tower, dating from the 13th century, has two stages divided by string courses and includes lancet windows, cinquefoiled pointed lights, and trefoiled ogee-headed lights, topped with an embattled parapet. Inside, the chancel has a barrel roof with tie beams, while the nave roof is from the 19th century. The church contains 18th-century altar rails, a pulpit, and three benches with Perpendicular ends, along with a circular stone font and 18th-century memorials in the chancel dedicated to Mary Seagrove, John Seagrove, and Martha Drake.
