Description
Baker Thornicroft's House and Country Fayre is a house and shop with a domestic wing, dating from the mid-18th century. An addition, likely from the early 19th century, forms the Country Fayre section. A rear wing was added in the 19th century, and the entire building has been considerably altered in the 20th century. The main house is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a string course and a dogtooth cornice. The Country Fayre section is rendered and colourwashed. The roof is tiled, with brick stacks at the left end and along the ridge. The building comprises a four-unit plan, extended to create an L-shape. It has two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical four-window front to the main house. The front door is a four-panelled door with a fanlight, both containing glazing bars. The ground floor windows are wood and iron mullioned and transomed, set within brick segmental arches. The first floor windows are two-light wood and iron casements, also within brick segmental arches. A 20th-century dormer window is present in the attic. The Country Fayre section has a 20th-century glazed door and fanlight with glazing bars, and a large, old wood mullioned and transomed canted bay window with a hipped tile roof, featuring two lights on each side. The right return side includes late 20th-century shop windows, glazed doors, and casements in altered openings. The interior has not been inspected.
