Description
The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the 16th century, with early 19th-century alterations and partial rebuilding and restoration in 1866. The building features timber framing and rendering, but is mainly constructed of red brick, topped with a tile roof and brick chimneys.
The plan is complex, with the main front facing the garden, consisting of one high storey and an attic, along with a two-storey cross wing to the left. The entrance is situated in the angle of the building. The fenestration is irregular, featuring a stone canted bay with a small dormer above, a large arch-top sash window with margin bars on the right, and a French door with a 16-panel sash above in the cross wing. Other windows include iron casements with arch-top lights. The main entrance has a half-glazed four-panel door in a plain surround, leading to a porch supported by two cast-iron columns with a lead roof. The building has gabled roofs and a prominent internal stack with two star-shaped shafts.
The left return side displays exposed close studding on the ground floor. The main entrance on the right return is adorned with early 19th-century Gothic ironwork in the porch. Inside, there is a straight flight staircase with a cut string. A ground floor room features two Roman Doric columns and pilasters, while the bedroom above boasts an early 19th-century shallow vaulted ceiling with four astragal moulded ribs and a vine cornice. A large wing constructed in 1866 was demolished in the mid-20th century.
