Description
Burman's Farmhouse, located in Shottery, Stratford-upon-Avon, is a late 18th to early 19th century building that incorporates earlier elements. It is constructed of painted brick, much of which has worn away, and features a tiled roof with brick stacks. The farmhouse has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a five-window range.
The structure includes three gabled wings, a catslide outshut to the left, and a single-storey kitchen wing on the left return, along with a lean-to outshut on the right return. The entrance is located in the central gable and features a 20th-century pentice on timber posts and a three-panel door; there is a small window to the right. The segmental-headed windows have pegged cross-casements with small-paned glazing, including a three-light transomed window to the left of the entrance and another in the outshut to the right. The first floor has four windows with cross-casements, while the outshut to the left includes a four-light window and a triangular dormer with a three-light casement.
There is a cross-axial stack and an additional stack on the central wing. The rear of the building has a hipped left end, which may be a later addition, featuring a small porch and a balcony above an attached projecting loggia that has a re-used moulded beam on the inner return and a French window on the first floor. To the left of the segmental-headed entrance, there is a straight joint leading to a gabled canopy over a plank door with a heavy pegged frame.
The ground floor windows have segmental heads, including a three-light transomed window and a cross-casement to the left of the entrance, as well as two Tudor-headed lights with iron lattice glazing and a straight-headed four-light window under a relieving arch. The first floor features a three-light transomed window with some leaded glazing, a cross-casement window with leaded glazing, a segmental-headed window with a three-light casement, and a window with a two-light leaded casement. There are also two gabled dormers with two-light leaded casements and a right end lateral stack.
Inside, the farmhouse is noted for its chamfered beams and fireplace bressumers.
