Description
Hathaway Hamlet is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick, featuring some internal timber framing, and has a thatched roof with brick stacks at the rear of the ridge. The building stands two storeys high and has a three-window range. The central entrance is topped by a hipped thatch canopy and leads to a plank door from the 20th century. The windows have timber lintels and 20th-century leaded casements, with the ground floor featuring a three-light and a two-light casement, while the first floor includes a central four-light dormer and a three-light dormer to the right. The left side of the building has a sun lounge under a hipped thatch roof with a four-light casement above, and the right side has a later glazed lean-to extension. Inside, the central room has a chamfered beam, timber-framed cross walls, and an original fireplace to the left, with the roof having been raised. Hathaway Hamlet originated in the 17th century as a collection of two or three cottages and farm buildings. In the late 18th century, most of the buildings were converted into a workhouse and almshouses for the parish of Old Stratford, which were later replaced in 1836 by the union workhouse in Stratford.
