Description
The Bath House, located approximately 60 metres north-east of Walton Hall, is a bath house and garden pavilion that has been converted for holiday accommodation. It was built around 1750 and underwent extensive restoration between 1987 and 1991. The building is attributed to the architect Sanderson Miller, with shellwork by Mary Delaney. It features cyclopean masonry and ashlar, topped with a slate roof that has a small lateral stack.
The structure is two stories tall and built into the slope of the ground, presenting a canted front. The exterior includes a cyclopean basement with a large elliptical-arched recess and a round-headed entrance with a gate. The upper floor has three windows with architraves for 6/6 sash and two 4/4 sashes, along with blind panels above. The rear side features a pediment and an impost band above a large round-arched recess, which has an archivolt and key block. The entrance on this side has a 6-panel door and two small windows.
Inside, the basement showcases rough masonry with rough piers supporting a vault made of flattish stones that project downwards, along with a sunken ashlar plunge bath. The upper floor also has a vault, with plasterwork and shellwork that has been recreated from surviving fragments. The ceiling features plaster icicles, while the walls display shell festoons. A 20th-century fireplace includes a rosette with surviving 18th-century shells. The Bath House is owned by the Landmark Trust.
