Description

Howards End is a house built in the mid to late 18th century, constructed of brick in Flemish bond with buff headers. It features a tiled roof with brick coping, a brick cross-axial stack, and an end stack. The house has a three-unit plan and is two storeys high with an attic, presenting a three-window range.

The entrance, located to the left of centre, has a heavy frame with an overlight above a six-fielded-panel door, and is sheltered by a 19th-century bracketed canopy. The windows have segmental heads; the ground floor includes a large central window with a two-light transomed small-paned frame and an iron casement, a three-light transomed leaded casement to the left, and an 8/8 sash window in a moulded frame to the right. On the first floor, the central window features paired 6/6 horned sashes, flanked by windows with 6/6 sashes, one of which is horned. The attic has three gabled dormers, each with two-light leaded casements. A clock face on the first floor to the right of centre displays the lettering: JNO WALKER LTD/ 63 NEW BOND ST.

At the rear, there is a tall gabled wing with a single-storey gabled wing to the right and a 20th-century glazed addition. The left return has two windows with two-light leaded casements.

Inside, a winding stair rises between the walls, and there are some plain beams. The rear room features a large fireplace with a flat pine surround and a cornice that returns at each end, along with several six-fielded-panel doors. The property is complemented by plain iron railings and a gate.
