Description
This is a group of nine headstones located approximately 5 meters southeast of the porch of the Church of St Peter in Wellesbourne. The headstones date from around 1700 to the 19th century and are made of ashlar stone.
The headstones are arranged in two rows. The row to the west features an inscription panel with an architrave and a broken pediment, flanked by pendants of flowers, and topped with a pulvinated frieze and a swan-neck pediment. There is a verse inscription on the back.
In the row to the east, there are two stones at the southern end. One has a broken top but displays good quality carving of flowers surrounding a worn cartouche. The other stone, dedicated to Mary and Hester Hopkins who died in 1704, features a well-preserved inscription within an architrave, flanked by pendants of flowers and a broken pediment, with a cherub and rosettes on top, and a verse inscription on the back. The group also includes six additional headstones from the 18th and 19th centuries.
