Description

This barn, located approximately 50 meters north of Wootton Hall, is a structure that was built in two stages. The original part dates from the late 16th century, while an additional section to the north was added in the early to mid-18th century. There have been later alterations, including an early 20th-century encasing of the original range. The barn is timber-framed, with brick and render casing, a renewed tile roof, and a reddish-brown brick structure topped with an asbestos roof.

The exterior features the original range, which consists of three bays and has an aisle on the south gable. It is clear that this range was once part of a longer structure, which is now partly converted. The ground floor includes four garage doors and a part-glazed door, while the upper floor has a pitching door and two small casement windows. The northern range has two elliptically-arched stable entrances, one of which is blocked, and a casement window in a segmental-headed opening to the right. The upper stage of this range features two pitching doors.

Inside, the upper floor of the barn is an intact close-studded, timber-framed space with three bays and an aisle to the south gable. It contains three collar-and-tie beam roof trusses with queen struts. This part of the barn is clearly a segment of a much longer range that extends at least another three bays to the south, which has been converted into a dwelling. The northern range includes two collar-and-tie-beam trusses with angle struts.

The original range of buildings is believed to relate to an earlier complex on the site, from which the Dovecote remains. This barn is one of the earliest surviving examples in the Stratford Rural District. All the listed buildings on the Wootton Hall Estate, known as Wootton Park, are part of a group value context.
