Description

College Farmhouse is a farmhouse that is reported to have origins from the 15th century, with most of its structure dating from the 16th century, along with alterations and additions from the early 17th century and early 19th century. It features a timber frame built on a stone plinth, with some roughcast at the rear and additions made of coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings and painted brick. The roof has been renewed with tiles, replacing the original slate, and includes a brick internal stack and a rear stone lateral stack with offsets. The layout consists of a two-unit plan with a cross wing.

The exterior is two storeys plus an attic. The east elevation showcases exposed timber-framing, and there is a tall narrow central stair tower. To the left, there is a large gabled wing with a catslide outshut, and to the right, a 20th-century lean-to conservatory. The entrance to the wing features a plank door, while the windows are mostly 19th or 20th-century casements. The right end was rebuilt in brick in the early 19th century and has a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door, flanked by similar windows, and a first-floor window with a three-light casement.

At the rear, there is a large lateral stack with two diagonal shafts and two small fireplace lights. To the left, a pebbledash section includes a small light on the ground floor and a window with a two-light small-paned casement on the first floor. To the right of the stack, there is a recessed hollow-chamfered mullioned-and-transomed window with a labelmould on the ground floor, a similar two-light window on the first floor, and a gabled dormer with a two-light window. The gabled right end is pebbledashed on a high stone plinth, with a 20th-century casement window on each floor.

Inside, the farmhouse features broadly chamfered beams with stops, some exposed timber framing, and wall posts. The room to the rear left has a large stone fireplace, with its rear visible in the outshut. The room to the right contains a large exposed fireplace with two small lights and a bressumer. The dairy at the right end has hooks but no beams. There is a winding stair and first-floor beams, framing, and wall posts, while the attic includes trusses with collars and diagonal struts. The farmhouse is still owned by Magdalen College, Oxford, which is the source of its name.
