Description
Alveston Pastures Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, with an attached open-fronted shed. It dates from the mid-18th century, incorporating an early 17th-century core, with later alterations and additions from the late 18th century. The building features a combination of brick and timber-framing, topped with tile roofs and brick end stacks. The farmhouse is arranged in an L-shape, with the shed forming a U-plan layout.
The structure is two storeys high with an attic and presents a symmetrical three-window facade, complemented by a two-storey, single-window wing on the right side. A top moulded brick cornice and a modillioned cornice adorn the wing. The round-headed entrance features a doorcase with a 19th-century porch supported by fluted posts and an open pediment, topped by a fanlight with radial glazing bars above a 19th-century six-panel door. The windows have brick sills and are topped with rubbed brick flat arches, featuring 16-pane sashes, while the central first-floor window is a 12-pane sash. There are three hipped dormers with casements. The projecting end stacks add to the structure's character. The wing includes a 12-pane sash and a first-floor six-pane sash.
At the rear, there are windows with three-light transomed casements, which have ovolo moulding, above a late 20th-century addition currently under construction. The wing features segmental-headed windows, and there is a lean-to projection on the inner return with a three-light transomed casement and an entrance with a heavy pegged frame leading to a battened door. Other windows include casements and one dormer, while a single-storey wing at the rear has an entrance with a plank door and 20th-century gabled dormers.
Inside, the farmhouse showcases chamfered beams, with the front range displaying broadly chamfered beams, some stop-chamfered, and a large fireplace featuring a stop-chamfered bressumer and a brick smoke hood, although the back wall was removed in the mid-20th century. A late 20th-century staircase has been added. The 10-bay shed, with a six-bay return, likely served as a shelter for cattle. It features square framing on a brick plinth with tension braces and a renewed tile roof with a hipped end. The entrance is located at the left end, while the rear has timber posts on stone pads, and the return showcases rounded brick piers. The shed's structure includes tie-beam and collar trusses with principals crossed at the apex.
