Description
Thelsford Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse with 18th and 19th-century additions. It is timber-framed with brick infill, some of which is roughcast or painted, standing on brick and stone plinths. Brick additions are also present, and the building has gabled tile roofs with brick end stacks and a stack to one side of the ridge.
The farmhouse has a roughly L-shaped plan, with an 18th-century south wing and later additions to the north. The west front, which faces the garden, has three bays. The gable end of the timber-framed wing features roughcast infill and bracketed bargeboards with a finial. The entrance is to the right, with a doorcase featuring a bracketed open pediment above a four-panel door, with two glazed lower panels. A canted bay window to the left has a hipped tile roof above a 1:2:1-light small-paned window with an iron opening casement; a 20th-century window is above. An 18th-century brick wing to the right has a stone plinth and applied timber framing with roughcast. A segmental-headed window on the ground floor has a three-light glazing with an iron opening casement, mirrored above with a four-light casement. A gabled roof dormer has enriched bargeboards and finial over a two-light small-paned casement. An external end stack has offsets. A small wing to the left has applied timber framing and a small window.
The south front has timber framing over a brick ground floor, with a central entrance and two windows with three- and four-light casements. The first floor has three hipped half-dormers with cross-casements and iron opening casements. A lean-to block re-enters the wing, and small-paned casements are in the 18th-century wing. A rear ridge stack and a large external end stack, raised in the 19th century, have offsets. A lower, slate-roofed wing to the right end has an entrance to a projecting return.
The north side features a timber-framed wing with brick infill and 20th-century casements. A small 19th-century gabled wing to the right has segmental-headed windows and exposed timber framing. A catslide outshut to the left of the gabled wing has a three-light casement, and the outshut to the right end wing has a two-light window within a former segmental-headed entrance, with a leaded casement above. A slate-roofed wing to the left end has timber lintels to casements and a re-entrant porch. A single-storey brick wing with a hipped tile roof ends the north side.
The interior includes stop-chamfered spine beams, exposed square framing to the cross walls, and one room with a large fireplace with a cornice. The roof has exposed trusses with three struts between the tie beam and collar. The 18th-century wing has wide floorboards and a late 19th-century fireplace.
