Description

The Gables is a house located on High Street in Henley-in-Arden. It dates back to the 15th century, with alterations and additions made in the 17th and 19th centuries. The building features a timber frame with plastered infill, while the left half has been refronted in brick with blue brick dressings. It has old tile roofs and brick stacks, and the plan is complex, including an L-shaped front range with a gabled cross-wing to the right that has a jettied upper floor.

The exterior is two storeys high and includes a two-storey re-entrant gabled porch. The entrance features chamfered reveals and a pointed-arched panelled door with cusped glazed spandrels. Above the entrance is a narrow light with chamfered reveals, and the gable has a blue lozenge design. The wing has a narrow bay window with 1:4:1-light transomed glazing and an iron opening casement. The first floor features a canted oriel with a hipped roof over 1:3:1-light leaded glazing, and the returns have single lights with cusped ogee arches and traceried spandrels. The ground floor and first floor have close-studded framing with tension braces on a double jetty, and there is a moulded bressumer on the joist ends with coving above.

To the left, there is a gabled bay with altered ground-floor and first-floor windows featuring a projecting 3-light casement, while the return has square framing on the first floor. The right return has a stone external stack with a brick shaft.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is recorded to have a fireplace with a chamfered lintel and a 16th-century ceiling. The building is traditionally associated with a hospital for travellers and the poor, which was founded in 1448.
