Description
Nos. 7 and 8 Rother Street are a pair of town houses, with part of the building now used as an office, dating from around 1798. They are constructed of brick with buff headers and ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring brick end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The houses rise three storeys and have a six-window range, forming two double-fronted houses. There are two brick platt bands and a plain stone-coped parapet at the top.
The round-headed entrances are adorned with porches; No. 7 has plain columns and a Tuscan entablature, with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars above a six-panel door that includes two glazed panels, two fielded panels, and two flush panels. No. 8 is similar but has a partly enclosed porch with lotus capitals on the columns and a stained glass fanlight. The windows have sills and rubbed brick flat arches, with the ground floor featuring 4:12:4-pane tripartite sashes, the first floor having 12-pane sashes (with the left end window being taller and having an 18-pane sash), and the second floor consisting of 6-pane sashes. The interior is noted for its stick-baluster staircases.
