Description

This early 19th-century house and shop incorporates an 18th-century wing. The main part of the building is constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond, while the wing has painted brickwork. It has a slate roof with a brick end stack and a stack to the rear, and a tile roof to the wing. The building is arranged around a central staircase and features a projecting gabled wing to the left.

The exterior is three storeys high; it was originally a symmetrical three-window range. A moulded wooden cornice runs along the top. The central entrance has a doorcase with an architrave, frieze, and dentil cornice, leading to a 20th-century glazed door. To the left, there's another entrance with an architrave to a 20th-century six-panel door and a porch featuring Doric columns, a frieze, and a modillioned cornice that extends over a shop window in the wing, with a half-column at the left end. The shop window has six round-headed lights, with one to the right in a cant, featuring colonnettes and cable-moulded arches.

On the ground floor, a window to the right end has a narrow sill and a rusticated wedge lintel over an 8/8 sash window. The first floor has similar windows with 8/8 sashes flanking a 6/6 sash. The second floor mirrors this arrangement with 8/8 sashes framing a 6/6 sash. All sashes are horned. The wing has a segmental-headed first-floor window with a 20th-century three-light small-paned casement. The rear of the building has stacks.

The interior has not been inspected. Number 171A was previously listed as number 173.
