Description
Nos. 6 and 6A Chapel Street is a town house with an early 19th-century front that conceals a 17th-century building. The structure features exposed timber framing on the south side and a brick front, topped with a 20th-century tile roof and a brick stack at the rear of the ridge. It has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range where the windows are at different levels. A modillioned brick cornice runs along the top. The building has 20th-century shop fronts on either side of a high carriageway, which is accessed through paired plank gates. To the right of the centre, there is a segmental-headed window with a 12-pane sash. The first floor has segmental-headed windows, including two with sills and 12-pane sashes, and one to the right featuring a 4/8-pane sash alongside a 12-pane sash. At the rear, there are two lower wings with timber framing. The building served as an inn from 1763 to 1774, known as the White Bear, and again from 1806 to 1853 as the White Horse.
