Description
Church Houses, consisting of five houses, now including one office, were originally built in the 17th century and subsequently altered. They are constructed of coursed dressed lias limestone, with ironstone ashlar dressings to the right end and brick to the return and rear elevations. The roof is steeply pitched, tiled and has coped gables, a brick end stack, an axial stack, and two cross-axial stacks. The plan is long and rectangular.
The exterior presents two storeys and a seven-window range. There is one main entrance, along with several blocked entrances. Main entrances are located to the rear. The entrance to the left of centre has a timber lintel over a 20th-century half-glazed door, and the lintel extends over a side light. Further to the right is a timber lintel over a blocked entrance which also extends over flanking windows.
On the ground floor, four windows have timber lintels over 2-light casements, along with a 3-light leaded casement. Two windows to the right end have sills and ashlar lintels over 2-light casements. The first floor has a window to the left end with a brick jamb and a 2-light casement, a window with a 3-light casement, two windows each with 2-light casements, and two windows with one leaded light flanking a 3-light recessed-chamfered mullioned window. The right end has two windows with sills, one with a 2-light casement, and one blocked. An axial stack breaks the roofline.
The right return side shows quoins and coping to the brick gable. Each floor has a window with a chamfered opening; the ground floor window has a lintel with a key block, while the first-floor window has a brick segmental head, both with 2-light leaded casements.
The rear elevation is largely brick with varied window openings, with stone to the left end where an entrance is located. Some rear windows have leaded glazing.
The interior was not fully inspected, but No.1 has chamfered beams, and No.3 has a large fireplace with a bressumer.
