Description

Saracen's Well is a well located on Rookery Lane in Ettington, dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone. The well features a semi-circular basin that is fed by a spout designed in the form of a Saracen's head. Above the basin, there is a semi-circular panel that includes an inscription and a finial displaying the Shirley coat of arms. The Saracen's head symbolizes the crest of the Shirley family, who are associated with Ettington Park. According to local legend, a member of the Shirley family drank from the well upon returning from the Crusades, and his trophy, a Saracen's head, fell into the well and became petrified.
