Description
Wheelbarrow Castle is a house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone, featuring quoins and coped gables, and has a stone-slate roof with moulded stone end stacks. The building has a central-staircase plan and is two stories high, with a three-window range on the ground floor that includes three-light mullioned windows, and two-light mullioned windows on the first floor. The entrance features an 18th-century plank door, which is hinged vertically at the center, surrounded by a moulded wood frame with a plain overlight and a stone flat arch. There is a 19th-century timber porch, a 20th-century skylight, and at the rear, there are two 19th-century casements with wood lintels and one chamfered light. Inside, the property has chamfered spine beams and a large open fireplace, which is faced in the 19th century. There is a central winder staircase, and stone steps lead down to a beer cellar. The building was formerly a coaching inn.
