Description

The barn at Monk's Barn Farm is a 17th-century structure with later additions. It features a timber-frame construction with brick infill set on a coursed rubble plinth, topped with thatch and tile roofs.

The exterior consists of a five-bay barn that includes two entrances leading to the threshing floors, each fitted with paired plank doors. The square framing is supported by braces to the wall plates and tension braces. The south-west gable is adorned with weatherboarding above a lower outbuilding that shares similar architectural details. On the south-east side, there is a brick catslide outshut and an entrance with a split door, while the end features a window and a pitching hole. The rear also has a pitching hole. The north-east end is connected to a 19th-century brick stable, which has segmental-headed windows flanking a wide entrance.

Inside, the barn boasts tie beam trusses with struts on the inner wall posts. The central trusses are accompanied by low partitions, one of which is timber-framed with some brick infill, while another is made of rubble with tension braces. One truss features king and queen struts to the collar, and the outer trusses are supported by braced tie beams. The site is believed to have historical connections to monastic activities.
