Description

The Church of St. James is a church built between 1857 and 1858 by Edward Haycock. It is constructed from lias ashlar with limestone dressings and features a tile roof. The church has a three-bay nave, an apsidal chancel, a west bellcote, and a vestry, all designed in a late 13th-century style. The exterior includes geometrical tracery with hood moulds. On the north side of the nave, there is a double leaf folding door with keeled roll moulding, set in an open timber porch. The eastern side has a two-light window, with single lancets flanking the door. The west front is characterized by diagonal and central buttresses and two cusped lancets. The south side has no windows and features a vestry with a catslide roof. The chancel has a three-sided apse with single lancets that have trefoiled circles, as well as a two-light window on the north side. Massive clasping buttresses are located at the angles of the chancel.

Inside, the chancel contains an aumbry to the north and a single sedilia to the south. The chancel arch is simple, with a hood mould supported by brackets carved with naturalistic lilies and grapes, which are painted. The walls throughout are plastered, and the roofs are simply arch-braced. Notable fittings include a large octagonal font supported by four half-hipped gablets, a fine High Victorian wood lectern, and contemporary stained glass in the apse. Although it is an inexpensive small church, it features a well-considered design with high-quality detailing. The church is prominently situated, overlooking the Cotswolds.
